"With Mind and Heart" (continued) - Interview with Verzhine Svazlyan
The article is a continuation of an interview with Dr. Verjiné Svazlyan, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Professor, devoted to her scholarly path in the field of Armenian ethnography and folklore studies. The beginning of the conversation was published in «ANIV» No. 2 (23), 2009.
Introduction and Methodology
The interview is structured as a sequential account of the researcher's biographical and scholarly experience, spanning more than half a century of work within the system of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. The text is based on V. Svazlyan's personal recollections of her formation as a scholar, her mentors, archival discoveries, and field expeditions.
The Fate of the Sarkis Haykuni Archive
A special place in the interview is devoted to the story of the rescue of the manuscript legacy of the ethnographer Sarkis Haykuni (1838–1908):
• manuscripts believed to have been lost were preserved thanks to the scholar's daughter, who had emigrated to France;
• after the Second World War, the archive was handed over to Soviet prisoners of war for return to their homeland;
• Lieutenant Araz Karapetyan, finding himself in Siberian exile, kept the documents for seven years and subsequently handed them over to the museums of Yerevan.
Based on these materials, V. Svazlyan defended her candidate dissertation in 1965, devoted to the life and work of S. Haykuni — a successor of the traditions of Garegin Srvandztyants in the study of the folklore of Western Armenia.
Field Research and Scholarly Activity
An account is given of her work at the Institute of Literature and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR:
• participation in the 1959 expedition to the Armenians of the Don (Nor Nakhichevan), who had preserved the Crimean dialect;
• participation in the preparation of the multi-volume edition «Armenian Folk Tales» (the volumes «Artsakh-Utik», «Taron-Turuberan», «Van-Vaspurakan»);
• many years (18 years) of work systematizing approximately 16,000 Armenian folk quatrains using quantitative methods of analysis.
Research on the Folklore of Musa Ler
Considerable attention is given to the 1978 report «Synchrony and Diachrony of Musa Ler Folklore» and the subsequent publication of the collection «Musa Ler» (16th volume of the series «Armenian Ethnography and Folklore»). The book gathers approximately 1,500 samples of various folklore genres, accompanied by linguistic, historical, and sociological commentary, a dictionary of the dialect, and musical notations of songs.
Key Conclusion
The interview demonstrates that V. Svazlyan's scholarly activity represents a purposeful continuation of the tradition of Armenian ethnography begun by G. Srvandztyants and S. Haykuni, and is directed toward preserving the vanishing cultural heritage of Western Armenians, their dialects, and their oral memory. Her work confirms that the systematic recording of the folklore of the diaspora and repatriates is an indispensable source for the historical reconstruction of the collective memory of the Armenian people.
